Dr. Harrison Vawter
“Before coming to bodyfit and training with David, I would have never thought in a million years I'd try a combat sport. I've never been involved in any kind of physical altercation and I've always seen myself as a weak skinny runner build. During the first few months of training jiu jitsu, it can be a bit confusing and frustrating. David was always patient, firm, and direct with his feedback and coaching style which really helped me stay consistent. When a training session would be exceptionally difficult for me he would always take time to ask me how I was doing. Now that I'm a few years into it, I can step back and really appreciate the culture that structured and consistent hard training will foster. I have an immense sense of pride belonging and competing under the team at bodyfit. That sense of pride comes from training hard, good coaching, and strong leadership.”

I’ve known David for over 20 years, and I’ve observed him as a training partner, a Jiu Jitsu instructor,
competitor, weight lifting coach, and gym owner. I’ve trained with David as a young and fit competitor
and also as a middle-aged professional who is just trying to keep a hobby. Regardless, David’s attention
to detail and commitment to my advancement cannot be overstated.
I have quit Jiu Jitsu more times than anyone you have ever met, always because of something that had
nothing to do with Jiu Jitsu. But each time, David was there to help me. When I was too injured to train,
David met me in the weight room and helped me rehabilitate. When I was too busy starting my business
and family, David was there to help me get some rounds in. When I got old and overweight, he was
there to keep me accountable and help me lose 20 pounds. And when the pandemic basically made it
impossible for me to train for 18 months (because of some job requirements), David was there to
welcome me back and help me catch up.
I’ve been to jiu jitsu schools all over the country, and trained with no less than 30 instructors, but Bodyfit
(and VavaPirata teammate Pirata Jiu Jitsu) has been home for as long as it has existed.
What you can expect:
The facilities are always clean. There is plenty of mat space and the mats themselves are high quality.
The weight room and in particular “the basement” is the best weight training facility I’ve seen.
The Jiu Jitsu instructors are high quality. I’ve known David and Corey for literally their entire Jiu Jitsu
careers and they have consistently proven to be high performers, but more importantly focused on
attention to detail. Their training methodology is hard but safe and sane. If you are looking for intensity,
you will find it. If you are looking for something a little slower, you can find that too.
Training partners will come in all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. You will train with muscled up
monsters and skinny kids alike. There are plenty of young people as well as middle-aged and older
people to train with. The classes tend to have a good mix of belt levels.
The intensity level of this gym is going to be higher than average, but you will be able to fit in this gym
whether you are a serious competitor or a hobbyist. David and Corey are black belts under Dustin
Denes, which is the Carlson Gracie wing of the family tree. I have not competed in a Jiu Jitsu tournament
in many years, but I’ve never felt left behind or neglected here. Likewise, the school is very successful
locally and nationally in competitions. The school teaches well-rounded Jiu Jitsu, but the instructors are
known for half-guard and top pressure.
